Vermont State House
The capital city of Vermont, Montpelier is a scenic city and the smallest capital in the country. However, what Montpelier lacks in population, its makes up for in museums, historical sites, and outdoor adventure.
As the capital of Vermont, downtown Montpelier is home to the Vermont State House – a stunning example of Neoclassical and Greek Revival architecture first completed in 1859.
The Vermont State House is known for the iconic gold leaf dome, designed by famed architect Thomas Silloway. Enjoy a tour of the historic state house, and explore Montpelier for more New England heritage sites.
Neighboring the state house, the Vermont Historical Society Museum is another way to explore Vermont’s storied past. Home to over 20,000 artifacts across 5,000 square foot, this award-winning museum was established in 2004 at the Pavilion Building.
VHS Museum visitors can also get information on the Vermont History Expo – an annual summer event featuring presentations and performances, plus live music, great food, and children activities. Referred to as history’s county fair, the expo in held at the Tunbridge Fairgrounds – just 30 miles south of Montpelier.
For outdoor fun during your time in Vermont, visit Hubbard Park – home to medieval-looking 54-foot observation tower. The 185-acre Hubbard Park features hiking and cross-country skiing trails, a soccer and baseball field, and a scenic pond.
Take advantage of the sledding hill during the chill of winter, or grab a cozy picnic spot during the summer. Hubbard Park guests are surrounded by unique Vermont vegetation and wildlife, so look forward to your time in outdoor Montpelier.
