Southern Vermont State Parks
Venture across southern Vermont and discover a variety of exceptional state parks. From Bennington to Ludlow, plan your next trip into the Green Mountain State and have a blast exploring these pristine state parks.
Just outside of Bennington you'll find Lake Shaftsbury State Park, a relatively new park, having only opened in 1974. Lake Shaftsbury State Park opens to the public on Memorial Day – plan a trip to the park and enjoy hikes, picnics, and plenty of bird watching.
Almost directly east of downtown Bennington is Woodford State Park, home of the Adams Reservoir. At 398 acres in size, Woodford State Park is a large expanse, featuring plenty of wooded areas, picnic tables, and hiking trails. Woodford opens up on Memorial Day – plan your visit accordingly and be sure to fish the shores of Adams Reservoir.
Keep heading east from Bennington and discover Molly Stark State Park in Wilmington. Molly Stark State Park, like many of the other state parks, opens to the public for the season on Memorial Day and runs through Columbus Day. Be sure to explore all you can at Molly State Park – hike the Nature Center Spur or the Mt. Olga Trail. Look for mountain biking trails and plenty of picnic areas.
Further north, closer to Ludlow, check out parks like Lowell Lake State Park and Emerald Lake State Park. Lowell Lake State Park is open all year long, and has become a top destination for those seeking excellent water recreation. You'll also find plenty of trails for hiking and horse back riding at Lowell Lake State Park.
Emerald Lake State Park sees its own share of water lovers – find your way there any time between Memorial Day weekend and Columbus Day. There's a playground for the kids, boat rentals, and even swimming holes ideal for a warm Vermont afternoon. Be sure to look into renting the Pavilion at Emerald Lake, too, for hosting any large gatherings.
