Cruise Through Bennington in Southwestern VT

VT's Unique Roadside Attractions

When traveling through Vermont be sure to swing by and explore these interesting and, often times, quite unique roadside attractions.

1. New England Maple Museum

When your Vermont travels have you exploring the western region, head for Rutland and experience one of the sweeter attractions in the area – the New England Maple Museum. Dedicated to all things maple syrup, the New England Maple Museum is located just north of downtown Rutland in Pittsford. Enjoy samples in the Tasting Room, and pick up relics at the Gift Shop.

2. Centennial Field

During your stay in South Burlington this spring or summer, enjoy a thrilling baseball game at Centennial Field, home of the Vermont Lake Monsters. Opened in 1906, this diamond was previously the home of University of Vermont baseball until that program was disbanded by the school. Today, the Vermont Lake Monsters play in the New York-Penn League

3. Wilson Castle

For some spooky roadside thrills, check out the Wilson Castle in Proctor. Constructed in 1867, this three-story mansion is said to be haunted, features 32 rooms, a unique mix of international architecture styles – you've got to see for yourself – and 13 fireplaces. One might think it gets cold in Vermont.

4. Vermont Marble Museum

Stick to the Rutland area for this next roadside beacon – it's the Vermont Marble Museum. Also found in Proctor, just off of State Route 3 and right along Otter Creek, the Vermont Marble Museum is a must for fans of art. It's located within a wing of the old Vermont Marble Company. Be sure to check out the huge marble bust of President John F. Kennedy which leads you to the Hall of Presidents

5. Norman Rockwell Museum

Especially great for those who love the arts, the Norman Rockwell Museum is a must-visit attraction in Rutland. Celebrating the life and work of Rockwell, the famous and iconic American-born artist, this museum is neatly situated along Highway 4, and features self-guided tours, along with a gift shop.

6. Ben & Jerry's Waterbury Factory

In Waterbury, find even more tasty treats when you visit Ben & Jerry's Waterbury Factory. Tucked away just off of Waterbury Stowe Road, this popular ice cream factory yields a full afternoon of fun for the whole gang. Check out a film all about Ben & Jerry's at the Cow Over the Moon Theater, and you cannot miss the Flavoroom.

7. Church Street Marketplace

Just inland from Lake Champlain in northwestern Vermont, the Church Street Marketplace is an ideal place to do a bit of shopping during your next stay in South Burlington. An uncovered, outdoor shopping complex, the Church Street Marketplace features a wide range of local vendors, chains, and boutiques.

8. College of St. Joseph

Easily accessed from Highway 4, the College of St. Joseph yields excellent campus tours – perfect for those families visiting with a soon-to-be-gradauted high school student in the group. Don't miss views of the College of St. Joseph Athletic Center or the Giorgetti Library.

9. Bennington College

Before you conclude your exploration of these roadside attractions in Vermont, be sure to swing by the campus of Bennington College in the town of Bennington. First founded as a women's college, this school became fully co-ed in 1969. Enjoy a campus tour and see the Crossett Library and the Jennings Music Building – just to name a couple.
